What is BMS?

2024-09-30

‌‌Battery Management System (‌BMS) is a technology specifically used to supervise battery packs. It aims to manage and maintain battery cells, monitor the status of batteries, prevent overcharging and over-discharging of batteries, and thus extend the service life of batteries. ‌‌

The BMS system uses a variety of sensors and actuators, as well as built-in advanced algorithms and signal line controllers to achieve real-time monitoring and management of batteries. Its main functions include battery status monitoring, safety assurance, charging strategy, energy regulation, balance maintenance, thermal management, and information integration. By accurately capturing the real-time working status of the battery, BMS provides a basis for the formulation of management strategies, and uses advanced algorithms and strategies to accurately evaluate the remaining power, health status, performance status, and energy status of the battery pack. In addition, BMS also comprehensively monitors various potential risks of the battery, such as undervoltage, overcharge, overdischarge, smoke, overcurrent, ultra-high temperature, short circuit fault, etc., and ensures the safety of the battery through fault diagnosis. In terms of energy control, BMS can intelligently adjust the charging process according to the real-time characteristics of the battery to ensure safe and efficient charging, and achieve the best battery performance by reasonably regulating the energy output of the power battery and regenerative braking energy recovery.

The BMS system plays a vital role in new energy vehicles. It is closely integrated with the power battery of electric vehicles. It uses sensors to detect the voltage, current, and temperature of the battery in real time. It also performs leakage detection, thermal management, battery balancing management, alarm reminders, etc. to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the battery and extend its service life. With the development of technology, the BMS system has gradually added many functions, such as remote monitoring and intelligent charge and discharge control, to adapt to the ever-changing market demand and technological progress.
